Student Externships The Academy of Rural Veterinarians is pleased to announce an externship assistance program available for veterinary students. This is part of our plan to promote rural lifestyle to veterinary students. ARV is planning to award financial assistance up to $250/week, for a maximum of $1000/student, for any student selected who wishes to spend time in a rural practice externship. The purpose of this program is consistent with the goals of the academy. We want to promote rural practice to any interested student. Our intent is to provide this as an opportunity to sway someone who is not sure about where they want to practice. The practice must have at least one ARV member and it must be a multi-species practice in a community in which agriculture is a major contributor to the economy, and/or a veterinary practice is economically sustainable in that community. We will begin accepting applications December 1, 2007, March 1st, 2008 is the application deadline, and there will be no extensions or applications accepted after that deadline. The grant period will be for externships/summer jobs from June 1, 2008 thru May 31, 2009. We will be unable to award funds for externships/summer jobs that begin before or after that time window Completed applications should
be mailed to: Grants will be awarded on or before April 15th, 2008. The qualifications for consideration are fairly straight forward. The student must be a United States Citizen and student member of the Academy of Rural Veterinarians, but may sign up at the time of submitting the application. The program is open to anyone enrolled in the professional curriculum of any AVMA accredited veterinary school, and again, we are most interested in those students that have not yet committed to a particular practice style, and would potentially be interested in rural practice. At least one veterinarian at the host practice must also be a member of the Academy of Rural Veterinarians. The host practice must be in the United States. They may also sign up at the time the grant application is submitted as long as they are current members when the application is received.
